Shutting Down The Blog

I had high hopes of doing more with this blog than I have, but the simple fact is that everything that I feel like discussing is either discussed on my main blog, or it's discussed in other areas of the site. So for that reason and many others, I'm going to be shutting down the "Director's Log". :(

It was fun while it lasted and I hope you enjoyed it.

Cooking With Gas Baby!

There has been just an absolute juggernaut of activity on the NPUG site these past few weeks. I'm just amazed at how much we've been able to get done in such a short amount of time. I have to attribute much of my progress to Getting Things Done. Using the GTD principles has been just phenomenal in getting me off my butt and into high gear! :)

We have all the sections we had in the old design, PLUS new sections as well. I still have a good deal of tweaking to get everything 100% complete, but I have to say that I'm very happy with where we are right now.

As if that wasn't enough, the Leadership Council has been going pedal to the metal as well. There are new members to the Council and a lot of new projects in the works and we haven't even had our Annual Brainstorming Summit yet. :O

I'm just hoping this new energy keeps up, because it can only mean bigger and better things for NPUG in the future. I think this old dog still has some hunt left in her. :P

OMG It's Been A Year

This past weekend, I was frustrated with the fact that I had so many things that I HAD to do and not enough time to do the things that I really WANTED to do. Then I sat back and thought about it for a second and thought, "If I had all the time in the world, what is it exactly that I would do?" That's when I thought about the NPUG web site. If I had the time, what I really wanted to do was finish up the NPUG redesign. After coming up with the answer though, I had to scratch my head. Why has it taken me so long to finish it?

Sitting down to pen this entry, I looked back to see when my last entry was and it turns out it was about 3 months ago in February. Looking back further, I realized that I started this little weblog over a year ago :O That's when the full impact of my thoughts came crashing down. I've been working on the redesign for over a year What the hell! ???

Of course to say that I've been working on the site is a bit of an overstatement. I hit a bit of a wall with a few things and I let that act as a roadblock that kept me from moving forward. First it was the logo, I moved past that, but as soon as I got to the Meetings section I hit a real wall. I simply couldn't figure out how best to display the content for that section. Instead of giving it serious thought, I simply set it aside and figured I'd come back to it later.

That obviously didn't happen - I allowed other deadlines and priorities to take over. There was running the PUG itself as well as work projects. Most recently I just wrapped up relaunching the PocketGoddess web site, which was no small undertaking. Having all but finished up that project, it made me question why I had failed to put that level of time and energy into the NPUG web site. Surely I could finish up what little remains here couldn't I?

Well as I sit here, I'm hesitant to take the next step. I need to get the May meeting information posted and I'm waiting to have a chat with Randy Jones about some stuff in IM. Shouldn't I get those items done before I go forward? The itch is there, but at almost midnight, perhaps now is not the best time to launch into wrapping up the last of this redesign? :P

A Few Upgrades

Just upgraded our install of MT up to 3.15. While I was at it, I upgraded MT-Blacklist and installed Brad Choate's MT-DBSL. Unfortunately weblogs are prime targets for comment and trackback SPAM and since this site runs on MT, we're not immune from it. MT-Blacklist has certainly been helpful, but my hope is that MT-DBSL will help even more.

If you run into any issues posting comments, or using the site, please let me know by posting a comment here.

Thanks in advance!

Man have things been busy. I did manage to get the Sponsors Page up though. :)

Chat Section Done

Just to give you an idea of how long it takes to do even just a little section like Chat. I sat down thinking that I could knock it out in about 30 minutes. Two and a half hours later, I'm finally done with it. Well, except for the fact that I think I need an altered header image for the logs section.

Just the "Articles" section to finish and the "Polls" section to add and complete and I'll be over the hump. Maybe tomorrow I can tackle those two sections.

Giving AdSense A Try

Since I manage both NPUG and InterPUG, it only makes sense that I would run the ads for InterPUG. However InterPUG has been dying on the vine for the last year, so until I get that site back up and running, I thought I might as well give Google's AdSense a test run to see if it's worth my while.

I've been running it on my weblog mashby.com. It hasn't netted me a dime yet because I haven't hit the minimum for them to cut me a check, but I figure NPUG might actually tilt the tables in my favor. I've never made a dime off of NPUG and InterPUG has been in the red since day one, but maybe this will help. We'll see.

Downloads Section Converted

After finally fixing a bug that was my own creation, I was able to get back, FINALLY, to converting the site over to the new design. I was able to get as far as the Downloads section.

Today was day two of getting my taxes done, so I didn't have time for much else. I filed an extension for the 2003 year and as although it feels like I just blinked, the August 15th deadline is just around the corner. Two 12-hour days later and I'm almost done. Woo hoo!

I plan on blocking out a few hours tomorrow to focus on getting the meeting section and maybe the front page up. We'll see. I have to get the meeting details posted for sure. That HAS to happen tomorrow.

Until then...

Testing HBlogger

Since I'm just farting around, I thought I'd try posting via hblogger. So far it's OK, but there's a lot of room for improvement.

Is This Thing On?

Mic check... *whew* *whew* Is this thing on?

As I was sitting here just now working on something for a client and decided to take a peek at the Director's Log to see if there were any comments posted here. There weren't any, which kind of got me to wondering...

Does anyone read this weblog?

Upgrade to 3.01D

I just upgraded MoveableType to version 3.01D. Clearly it's still a developer's release because there wasn't a lot of handholding. :)

Anyway, it looks like everything is working just fine. Although, please post a comment to make sure that everything is working properly.

Upgrade Complete

I just upgraded to the latest version of MoveableType - 3.0 Developer's Edition. I figured it'd be best to get that out of the way before I got too far down the road with the redesign, etc. I'm still using a default template for the time being, but at least it's a nice one. :)

With the upgrade comes the ability to use TypeKey. TypeKey is a centralized authentication system. Once more weblogs support it, the idea will be you won't have to log into each and every one in order to post a comment. From a weblog owners standpoint, it is a new method to limit the problem with comment SPAM. You can still post a comment the old way, but now I have to approve it before it appears. Since TypeKey is free, I'd suggest that everyone give it a shot because your comments will appear automatically.

Anyway, back to work.
