Computer Outlook Tuesday Shows

We had a ball today broadcasting live from the 2005 PalmSource Mobile Summit & DevCon. This was my first time really in the saddle with the whole crew from Computer Outlook. You have to keep in mind that up until yesterday, I only knew these guys from their voices on the telephone. So to be able to sit side-by-side with John and the “Q Man” was a real treat.

Today was also the day that we did the mid-day broadcasts. I didn’t know exactly how they worked, but quickly picked up the concept as we went along. During the day from 1:00pm till 4:00pm, we did interviews that were streamed directly to the web. The shows were not part of the usual AM nationwide broadcast. This was cool because it meant that we didn’t have commercial breaks and our times were a little bit more flexible so if we needed to push something back 5 minutes, it was no problem to do so.

Here’s a run down of who we interviewed and I’ll try and make them links to the actual audio content once those become available.
» John Tanner and Ben Earle of ClearSync (remember WeSync?) [link]
» Ed Colligan, President & CEO pa1m0ne [link]
» Stewart Dewar, Pimlico Software (aka DateBk5) [link]
» David Canfield of TraxItAll [link]
» Foy Sperring of Audible.com [link]
» Ewan Spence, Managing Editor for All About Palm [link]
» Jennifer Shelamer of SnapperMail [link]

As if that wasn’t enough, we still had the regular live broadcast at 5PM PST! Talk about a jam packed day. We split the show into two 30-minute segments, which allowed us to interview two more guests. This show was the regular format, so it was live and broadcast nationwide via AM and a couple of FM networks. I forget the exact number of affiliates, but I think I hear John say the number was something like 89. Kind a daunting when you think about it.

We’d been plugging along all-day, so you’d think the live show would be a piece of cake, but 15 minutes before the start of the show the phone line that we use to connect up with the studio in Las Vegas went out. That sent everyone running to find a solution to the problem. I was thankful that I don’t know anything about the technical side of how the show is broadcast, so I was able to just sit back and watch the fireworks. Smile

About 2 minutes before the start of the show, the land line came back to life and we were live. Whew. Without missing a beat, John introduced the show and everything went like clockwork after that.

Our first guest was Mark Bercow, Sr. Vice-President of Business Development for pa1m0ne and Jim Christensen who is the Director of Public Relations for pa1m0ne. Mark had been with Palm, Inc. from 1997 to 2000 and as of two months ago was back, so he was with Palm from the beginning and as he put it, “knows where all the bodies are buried.” Wink He was instrumental in the deal to bring the Palm name back under what is now known as pa1m0ne and it was great to get the skinny directly from the horse’s mouth. Jim has been on the show before and you can tell that he’s good at what he does. He made sure that we stayed on point and didn’t just hype, hype, hype, which is a nice change. Sure marketing is all rah rah, but to have the knowledge to back it up is rare.

In the second half, we had my good friend, Chris Dunphy of PalmSource. He is the key guy behind the new PalmSource Installer program and walked us through the paces of exactly what this new installer will do. I have to say that I’m THRILLED to see this come to the market and I can think of no one better to do it than PalmSource.

So that was day one of the Computer Outlook radio broadcasts. A full day for sure. Tomorrow we have another full day planned, but due to meetings scheduled with the Palm OS User Council, I’m afraid I’m going to have to miss many of the early afternoon shows. Frown I’ll still trying to get all the interviews booked and I’ll try and keep you updated as to what shows were done, etc.
