PalmSource Acquired By Access

PalmInfocenter.com is reporting that Japanese mobile Internet software company ACCESS will acquire PalmSource in an all cash deal worth as much as $324 million. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2005, pending regulatory approval. You can read more in the PalmInfocenter article here.

Hmm. Is this good or bad for the future of PalmOS and our favorite PDAs?

[Edit]Treocentral.com has a slightly longer article, mainly because they quote the entire press release. You can find it at this link.

Normally I am very opinionated about these types of things, but this is interesting to say the least. Will Access take technologies and kill the palm OS (remember BeOS) or will they develop a truly great platform and go after the Symbian market share? Only time will tell.

The most important thing here is that Linux is still is still in the mix. Developers get a warm and fuzzy feeling for that darned penguin. We will have to see how this one plays out. I truly don’t know how I feel about this latest news. At least not yet….

One thing is for certain you can expect to see Palm hardware selling pocket-pc versions very soon.
