Today Is The Last Day For Donations

Tomorrow, the NPUG Director, Michael Ashby, is going to ride his bike in the 11th Annual Jack Daniel’s “Bike to Jack & Back”. It’s a 150 mile bike ride to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis. He is on a team called “Katie’s Cruisers” and he’s riding for Kathleen Cullen, a friend who works for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, who was diagnosed with MS about 12 years ago. She’s unable to ride, so Michael and the rest of his team are riding on her behalf and they need your help.

Obviously the purpose of the ride is to raise money, so we’re asking all NPUG member to consider making a small donation. Believe it or not, even a small $5 donation is a big help and is greatly appreciated. Today is the last day for donations, so if you’d like to make a pledge, it has to be done today.

All you have to do is go to this link and select the “Sponsor Me” image on the right side of the page. From there you can make your pledge online without having to create an account or do anything fancy. What’s nice, is that you can also post a message that will appear on Michael’s sponsorship site.

We know that with Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, there’s a been a great deal of charity fund-raising that has probably left most of us feeling tapped out. However, we would encourage you, if at all possible to make a donation that you feel you can afford. $5 really can make a difference and every little bit helps. Thank you.

NPUG Sponsorship For MS Starts With A Bang!

In today’s meeting, we gave away two free tickets for Cumberland River Charters “Blue Heron” Nature Crusies. There were two other tickets on hand for sale and thanks to the generous nature of fellow member Jon Welty, we ended up auctioning the remaining too tickets and raised $41 dollars!

What is all this money being raised for? Well, our Director, Michael Ashby, is participating in the 11th Annual MS Bike Tour: Jack & Back. Michael will be joining 700 other cyclists in the jack Daniel’s MS 150 Bike Tour - the tour that will benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Michael is riding for Kathleen Cullen, a friend who works for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, who was diagnosed with MS about 12 years ago.

NPUG has always been and will continue to be a completely free organization and rarely do we ask for money. However, with the kick-off of the raffle today, Michael has asked fellow NPUG members to consider donating to this cause. His goal is to raise $500 and every dollar helps - even a donation of $5 goes a long way.

If you would like to make a contribution, simply point your browser to this link where you can make a pledge online.

PalmSource Acquired By Access

PalmInfocenter.com is reporting that Japanese mobile Internet software company ACCESS will acquire PalmSource in an all cash deal worth as much as $324 million. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2005, pending regulatory approval. You can read more in the PalmInfocenter article here.

Hmm. Is this good or bad for the future of PalmOS and our favorite PDAs?

[Edit]Treocentral.com has a slightly longer article, mainly because they quote the entire press release. You can find it at this link.

Reminder - Meeting Moved To The 17th!

Just a handy reminder, the September Monthly Meeting has been moved to the 17th. There will be no meeting this Saturday.

Last month our topic was on Utilities, Hacks & File Managers. At the meeting, we saw record attendance and it was clear that we didn’t have enough time to “go as deep” into the subject as everyone would have liked. So this month, we’re going deeper.

Fellow NPUG member Randy Jones, is going to drill down deep on the Top 20 Utilities for Palm OS. Some of the utilities may be device specific, but rest assured there will be plenty of cool tools and apps to help you maximize your device and squeeze all the power your can out of Palm OS.

What’s Your Favorite Utility?
Have a favorite utility that you think should be included in our “Top 20?” Well, make your voice heard by posting a comment to this news item and sharing with the rest of the PUG what your favorite utility is.
