Come Learn All About Weblogging This Weekend!

No matter where you turn these days, it seems everyone is talking about blogging. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about this new form of web content, the Nashville Palm Users Group has just what you’re looking for. This July, we’ll take a complete tour of the world of blogging, from soup-to-nuts.

Don’t know a single thing about the topic? Perfect! Already blogging and know a lot about the subject? Well, you’re STILL bound to learn something. We’re going to start from the very beginning of this new phenomena and show you how easy it is to begin your own blog. Then we’ll go even further and show you how you can blog directly from your Palm OS device and even create a photo blog. Some of the topics we’ll cover include:

Even though we’re primarily a Palm OS user group, this topic runs the gamut of technology - everything from desktops to handhelds to mobile phones. You may think that you’ll never publish your own blog, but there’s plenty to learn from the topic. We think you’ll be surprised to see just how big of an impact the technology of web logging is having on the Web. Learn today what you may be using tomorrow.

I haven’t opened my newly won Typepad blog account yet. I’ve been doing a bit of research on blogging prior to getting signed up. In doing so I came across some possibly interesting information for any of you who may be thinking about trying out blogging.

First, Google’s Blogger site, blogger.com will let you create a free blog, which is a pretty good price. But of course as members, any of us can create a Typepad site, http://www.typepad.com/ for 30 days free and then for 10% off the “retail” prices beyond that as a result of Six Apart’s (Typepad, Movable Type) generosity in providing the discount to us at the July meeting.

If you can’t quite decide between free Blogger and paid Typepad, you might want to read the comparison over at Emily Robbin’s blog called “How to Blog”, located at http://blogging.typepad.com/how_to_blog/2005/02/more_on_blogger.html . When she wrote the article in February 2005 she included 2 “coupon codes” for Typepad: “movable” is supposed to get you a 90 day free trial of the Typepad Plus version, and “LAUNCH” is supposed to get you a 10% discount. No idea if either of them still work. Obviously, as NPUG members, you won’t need the second one, as we’ll have our own 10% off code. But you might want to try the first one, if the Plus version sounds like something you’d be interested in.

For a good overview of blogs and blogging, check out this site over at the New York Times (fairly innocuous registration required), http://www.nytimes.com/ref/technology/blogs_101.html

It’s called Blogging 101, but it doesn’t tell you how to do web logging, it just gives you a good cross section of blogs, ranging from Curbed, on New York City real estate, to Treehugger, on environmental design and consciousness, to Saute Wednesday, on food, to Postsecret, where people divulge secrets by mailing post cards to the blogger who publishes them. There are about 75 in all, divided by category.

And don’t forget the Director’s blog, over at http://www.mashby.com as a good example of a somewhat more personal blog.
