This is it -- the final meeting of the Nashville Palm Users group. After 8 years, we've had over 80 monthly meetings and spent approximately 240 hours talking about Palm OS face-to-face; posted over 2,300 online discussions, served up terabytes of bandwidth and exchanged countless e-mails and it all comes to an end this Saturday.

But we're going out with a bang!

This Saturday is a celebration, a celebration of our love of Palm OS and all the many years that we've shared maximizing our use of our beloved PDAs and Smartphones. We will take our usual look at the current state of the Palm OS landscape and a peek at what we think will be coming down the pike in the future, but for the first time, we'll take look back.

Yes, it's been 8 years since we started NPUG and along the way, we've collected a lot of photos, audio clips, presentations and even video clips. So we'll take a few minutes to look back and talk about some of the highlights we've had along the way. We're gonna party like it's 1999 all over again.

And speaking of party, it wouldn't be one if there weren't presents! Our resident "Prize Pimp;, Randy Jones, has done an outstanding job of obtaining over $2000 worth of door prizes for the meeting. You may have heard me say this before, but it's never been more true - if ever there way an NPUG meeting you didn't want to miss, this is it. We have over 100 door prizes to give away, including a Treo 680, so rest assured, if you come to the meeting this Saturday, you're going to go home with plenty of loot.

So why not join us in a fond farewell as we celebrate the past 8 years and passion that we've shared with Palm OS? You definitely won't leave empty handed -- even if it is sticky from all the Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

1. Welcome & Announcements
After welcoming everyone to the meeting, we give a quick update on what's new with the user group. This include membership, web site updates, where our geocache bug tracker is, etc.

2. What's Happening In Palm OS?
Each month we cover everything that's happened over the past month with Palm OS. We discuss the handhelds, new cool software and what to look for in the future.

3. What's On Your Palm?
Our very own Fred Heumann asks the question, "What's On Your Palm?" and shares what are some of the latest, best and sometimes unusual programs for your Palm. This month, we'll be taking a good long look at freeware.

-- BREAK --

4. A Look Back
We've taken a lot of photos, audio and video along the way. In our final meeting, we take a look back and reflect on what a fun ride it's been.

5. Giveaways
In looking over the list, we may need to use the entire meeting to do nothing but giveaways. There's just so MUCH to hand out! Special thank you to every sponsor listed on this page -- it's because of your willingness to support your fanatical customers that we were able to last as long as we did. Thank you.

Out of all the mobile operating systems on the market today, Palm OS continues to be the most flexible and adaptive solution going. This is due in large part to the Palm OS developer community, which has written hundreds of thousands of applications. Armed with the right software, you can turn your humble PDA, or Smartphone into a veritable Swiss Army Knife of function and versatility.

To show you just how broad the Palm OS software market is, we're going to go from one extreme to the other. For starters, we'll take a look at "What's On Your Palm", by reviewing the area of Freeware - programs that don't cost a dime. From shopping lists to super geeky network apps, there's a plethora of software just waiting for you.

On the other end of the spectrum, we'll take a look at how to remote control your main computer. That's right, wether you have a Windows, Linux, or Mac, you can take control of your computer directly from your Palm OS device. From remote access, to full-on remote control, we'll walk you through just how easy it is to command your PC from the palm of your hand. Even seen Windows Server 2003 running on your Palm? Well, this weekend, you will.

4. Remote Control Your PC
Doesn't matter what type of computer you have, there's a way to remote control it from the Palm of your hand. We'll take a look at three different methods of gaining remote access and even remote control of your computer.

6. After The Meeting
Apple iPhone Demo
We are a Palm OS user group, but the Apple iPhone is clearly a much hyped mobile device and we would be remiss if we didn't give our users the 411 on this new mobile gem. I didn't stand in line to get one, but I wasn't far behind.

After playing with it for a solid week, I plan on giving a brief summary of the device and will of course pass it around so that everyone has a chance to see what all the fuss is about.

It's a cool device, but does it supplant Palm OS?

For some folks e-mail is a fun way to interact with friends and family. For others it can be a nightmare of overwhelming floods of junk e-mail. Whichever camp you fall into, this month's meeting will look at everything there is to do with e-mail and how you can make it a more efficient aspect of your digital life.

We'll start focusing on the desktop and all the various ways in which you can manage your e-mail. POP3, IMAP, filtering, eliminating SPAM, security, you name it we'll cover it. Oh and if any of those terms seem foreign to you, don't worry, we'll clarify everything as we take things step-by-step.

Once you have a clear understanding of your e-mail, the next obvious step is to make your e-mail mobile so that you can access it from anywhere. We'll discuss what options there are for Palm OS, the best e-mail apps on the market today and show you just how easy it is to manage your mail.

4. Apple iPhone Demo
The good, the bad and the pretty. The Apple iPhone is one of the most successful consumer electronics launches in history, but with all the hype it's hard to tell wether this device is all that it's cracked up to be. Well, with a full week of hands on experience, Michael will demo the device and pass it around for everyone to try.

It is a nice device, but it's not for everyone. There are plenty of "deal breakers" that may make you think twice about buying one, but like any digital solution, it all boils down to what's right for you.

-- BREAK --

5. E-mail Basics
There are a ton of options and technologies when it comes to managing your e-mail, so it's important to distinguish what the differences are. What better way than to start with the basics? POP, IMAP, SMTP, Webmail, we'll explain it all.

6. How To Combat SPAM
If you have an e-mail address then SPAM is no stranger. There are a lot of tips of how to prevent SPAM when you first get an e-mail address, but is it too late if your e-mail address isn't new? Of course not! We'll cover all the different ways that you can nearly eliminate SPAM all together from your inbox.

7. Making Your E-mail Mobile
Now that your e-mail is all straight and SPAM free, the final hurdle is to make it mobile! We'll cover the various options of getting e-mail on your Palm OS device and what software is the best for your needs.

8. Handy E-mail Tips
Time permitting, we'll share a few handy tips about e-mail in general. Topics such as archiving, keeping your inbox empty and the proper way to reply to an e-mail are just a few examples. We won't go into great detail, but share a lot of resources for further review.

Although the Treo doesn't come out-of-the box with capability to do advanced call logging, or the ability to integrate your call history with your contacts, but there are an abundance of third party software solutions which all fall under the category of "Call Logs."

Which call log software is right for you? This month, NPUG takes a look at all the various choices and gives you a run down to help you choose just the right solution.

The topic may sound dry and boring, but there'll be a ton of good information regarding mobile phones in general, so even if you don't have a Treo, there's a lot of good information to be had.

Microsoft Vista has been released and there's been a lot of comparisons to how similar/dissimilar it with to Apple's OS X. With all the hype and hoopla over Apple's operating system on television and the Internet (not to mention our meetings), we thought it was high time to take a look at what all the fuss was about. This month, NPUG will be giving a test drive of Mac OS X from the perspective of someone switching from Windows. We will look at the pluses and minus of Mac OS and see exactly what it's like to sync your Palm OS device with the "other" OS.

Of course switching from Windows to OS X doesn't mean that you have to leave your favorite applications behind. Thanks to software such as Apple's Boot Camp and Parallels Desktop, you can have your cake and eat it too. So after the initial test drive of OS X, we'll focus on how to run Windows on your Mac through the use of Parallels Desktop.

Every now and then we step beyond the boundaries of Palm OS and this is one of those meetings. But if you've ever wondered what it would be like to run a different operating system and how it would impact your PDA use, this is a meeting that you'll surely want to attend.

4. OS X - The Basics
OS X is a very advanced and powerful operating system, yet it boasts one of the best user interfaces on the market. We'll start our "test drive" by showing you how OS X is different from Windows and how there really isn't much of an adjustment in switching.

5. What About The Apps?
As great as an Operating System is, it's the applications that really make the difference. So we'll show you some of the application alternatives on the Mac side of things.

6. How Does It Sync?
We're a Palm User Group, so a test drive of Mac OS wouldn't be complete without demonstrating how to sync your Palm. We'll be giving a demo of Missing Sync and touch on what Palm users gain and what they lose by switching to Mac OS.

7. Running Windows - The Best Of Both Worlds
Of of the best parts about Apple's latest hardware is that it can run Windows! That's right, you don't have to give up Windows if you don't want to. We'll discuss briefly BootCamp, but our demo will be on Parallels Desktop and how you can both Windows and MacOS side-by-side. That's right, you can run Vista right along with Mac OS.

Ever since Ali Baba first uttered the immortal words "Open, Sesame" we have dreamed of the day where we too could control our world with nothing more than the sound of our voice. To be able to say "Open, E-mail", or "Delete, SPAM" and have a computer do our bidding is a fantasy I think we could all enjoy.

Well, what used to be considered a fantasy is quickly becoming a reality today. Biometrics is a quickly growing industry that has many different applications. This month, NPUG takes a look at voice recognition on your Palm OS device. To help make sense of this emerging technology, our guest speaker Kerry Woo, Vice President of Enterprise Relationships for VoiceIT Technologies, Inc., will be explaining how voice biometrics work and how we can use this technology right now.

1. Welcome & Announcements
After welcoming everyone to the meeting, we give a quick update on what's new with the user group. This include membership, web site updates, where our geocache bug tracker is, etc.

2. What's Happening In Palm OS

-- BREAK --

4. Biometrics Basics
We will delve into the basics of how biometrics work discussing the steps that a user typically goes through in order to use a biometric system. This will give you an idea of how truly amazing it is that these systems work to recognize users, make phone calls, and insure an added layer of security for your and your mobile device.

5. Guest Speaker: Kerry Woo, Vice President, Enterprise Relationships
Biometrics is a growing industry and VoiceIt Technologies is at the forefront of voice recognition software. We are so very fortunate to have our very own Kerry Woo discuss voice recognition software and VoiceIt Technologies product offerings. VoiceIt has many different packages but Kery will focus on a demonstration of VoiceNavIt.

6. Giveaways
At the end of the meeting we have a random drawing for door prizes donated by our Sponsors. This month we'll be giving away the following:

Courtesy of VoiceIt Technologies LLC

Treo, Zire, Tungsten, iQue -- there are so many options out there, how do you make sense of which device is right for you? Well, this month NPUG takes a look at how to upgrade to a new device and provides you with everything you need to know.

We will start by taking up the debate of PDA vs. Converged Device to help you decide which digital assistant is right for you. Next, we'll walk you through, step-by-step, how to properly move your data from one device to the other. Then we will wrap up with showing you how to protect your data on your shiny new Palm OS device.

Christmas is just around the corner and if you're hoping that Santa has a new Palm OS device in his bag for you, then this is definitely a meeting you want to make sure to attend.

4. PDA vs Converged Device Debate
Fellow NPUG members Randy Jones and Charlie Akers go head-to-head to debate the issues for choosing a PDA, or a Converged Device as your next digital assistant. Will they be battered and brusied when everything is said and done? Only one way to find out when you come to the NPUG meeting on SATURDAY SATURDAY saturday...

5. Upgrading The Right Way
Unfortunately, when you upgrade to a new device, you can't just HotSync and go about your merry way. To properly upgrade and keep your PDA running smoothly, there are a few small steps you have to take. We'll walk you through the basics so that all your data syncs perfectly the first time.

6. Keeping It Safe
Now that all of your data is living in it's nice new home, it's important that you keep that data safe. We'll conclude the meeting by showing you how to perform an "on-device backup" with products such as BackupMan to ensure that you never lose a single byte.

Some of the most popular smartphones around are the Treos from Palm. Palm has converged the cell phone and a Palm into one device that has become its most popular product. Instead of having to carry a phone and a planner, you can easily carry the Treo.

It doesn't stop there though, this October, we'll talk about everything Treo, we'll briefly talk about what comes with the standard Treo and what you can do with it "out of the box" and then show you how to "pimp" your Treo with the addition of third party applications. In most cases, all you need is the basic Treo but there's so much more you can do with not only additional software but also additional hardware as well. We'll take a look at some of the more popular hardware add-ons out there and how to get full usage from your Treo.

And once again for our birhtday bash there are a ton of prizes! Randy aka "The NPUG Prize Pimp" has once again outdone himself this year and put together over $2,000 in prizes this month so that everyone in attendance should walk away with a giveaway. Not only do we have some great giveaways, but we also have not one, not two, but three devices to give away! We have a Treo of the winners choice, a LifeDrive, and a T5! So if you want to learn more about Treos and see how to get the most out of it and possibly win a new Treo, then you want to be sure to attend this month's meeting.

There's no way we can cover everything about the Treo but we'll try and make a dent! We'll cover the basics and some other more advanced tricks. We'll talk about how your Treo is a multimedia device and we'll also talk about the plethera of hardware you can use with your Treo. By the end of the meeting, you should have a general understanding of the Treo and maybe come away with something you didn't already know.

It's that time of year again. Time for putting away the swimsuits and sandals and time for putting on the new clothes and backpacks. That's right, it's time for SCHOOL!

Love it or hate it, school places demands on our time and forces us to focus on new goals and new deadlines. To help you get ready for all the readin' rightin' and 'rithmetic, NPUG is going to focus this month on all the ways that you Palm device can lend a hand in yer schoolin'.

If you're a student, we'll show you how to track your grades and assignments, as well as show you how your Palm can help you prepare for college. If you're a teacher, we'll show you how your Palm can help you with lesson plans and even discipline within the classroom. If you're a parent, well arm you with tools that can help you monitor assignments and even make learning fun.

But what if you're not in school and no intention of going back? Well then chances are that every day has it's own type of "finals" in store for you. To help you deal with your daily deadlines, projects and problems, Randy Jones will be giving us a detailed demo of two must-have applications. The first is "Inspiration", which allows you to brainstorm ideas and create mind maps. The second cool application is "Thought Manager", which is great in helping you visualize your thoughts and focus on what's most important.

So wether you're a student, teacher, parent, or just trying to get through the day, there's going to be plenty to learn as we show you the many ways your Palm OS device can lend a helping hand.
