Welcome to the chat section of our site! We offer an informal meeting for NPUG members on openprojects.net, in the channel #npug. The NPUG Chat Room is always open, so feel free to pop in anytime!
NPUG uses IRC for it's chatroom. Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is one of the most popular and most interactive services on the Internet. Sure, the Web is nice for finding info and E-mail beats snailmail hands down, but when you’ve been wondering ‘where the others are?’, then IRC is what you’re looking for.
IRC is the net’s equivalent of CB radio. But unlike CB, Internet Relay Chat lets people all over the world participate in real-time conversations. IRC is where the Net comes alive!
Using an IRC client (program) you can exchange text messages interactively with other people all over the world. What program you use doesn’t really matter; all of them connect to the same chat networks. When logged into a chat session, you “converse” by typing messages that are instantly sent to other chat participants.
The following are a list of popular IRC clients. Please select the appropriate program for your operating system.
Palm OSIf you use a different platform then search for “[platform name] IRC client” in Google to find an IRC client.
Within your IRC client, you will need to know what server and chatroom to join to enter our chat room, or channel as they are called on IRC. The SERVER in which our chatroom is located is on irc.oftc.net and the CHANNEL is #npug.
In almost any client you can use the following commands to enter our channel:
/server irc.ofnc.net RETURN
/nick your_nickname RETURN
/join #puc balsa RETURN
