The goVox Digital Voice Recorder

goVox Digital Voice RecorderThe goVox “slimline digital voice recorder” for the Palm III is a really useful accessory, if: 1) you need to record brief notes regularly and, 2) you are not bothered by the slightly extra weight.

The goVox serves in-part as an alternative flip cover on the Palm III. It just snaps into place the same way the original flip cover does. Powered by its own lithium batteries (3V; 2032), the goVox has no effect on the Palm’s battery life.

Pressing a small button on the goVox activates the voice recorder; pressing it again turns it off. I suppose the biggest surprise I had when first using the goVox™ was the quality of the play-back. The quality is very good, and the sound volume is excellent.

Although the goVox is limited to a total of eight minutes recording time, one can record a lot of notes in that length of time. The company’s literature says “with normal usage, the batteries should last about 3 months.” My own usage must be less than normal, because I have used it regularly over 5 months, and it keeps on tickin’.

A recorded message can be paused by simply pressing the play button. Pressing the play button again continues playback. A red light indicates play is active. Messages can be deleted just as easily.

The modest amount of weight added to the Palm is an acceptable trade-off for me, since the goVox gives me the recording capability I need, without having to carry a cassette-based hand-held recording device. My primary use is in capturing ideas, “to do” items, and book titles/authors at retail bookstores (to remember to order them later from Amazon).

The goVox is not a dictation system - you probably will not hand off the goVox to a transcriber. And there are no ear phones or foot pedals. The goVox is just an elegant little digital recorder with great sound that also functions as a protective flip cover for your Palm III. If you like the concept, I recommend it to you.

Landware (http://www.landware.com) sells the goVox for $54.95. You can find more information by selecting this link.
