GoType Keyboard for the Handspring Visor

GoType Pro for the Handspring VisorSome people’s portable computing needs are very small. Not everyone needs a portable computer that can surf the web, access PowerPoint presentations, and play MP3 files all at the same time. I just need a word processor that I can use on the run. Enter the most useful accessory ever for my Handspring Visor: the GoType Pro keyboard by Landware (I am typing this review on the keyboard using the Memo application).

Installation
Installing the GoType software using my iMac was a breeze. I ran the installer, HotSynced my Visor, followed the instructions, dropped it into the keyboard, and started to type.

Nothing happened.

I looked at all of my settings again, checked the FAQ, looked at the instructions again.

Nothing happened.

Then I remembered reading somewhere on the web that the beam receive on Visor models has to be ON for the keyboard to work. That solved the problem instantly. Go figure.

Usage
The GoType Pro is a little smaller than other keyboards, making typing a little difficult to get used to at first. I have no problem with it now, but my wife still feels a little uncomfortable typing on it. I like the fact that it has a space reserved for Springboard modules in the back (if only I had some). The GoType has a row of six extra function buttons across the top of the keyboard that allow for quick access to your favorite applications. I really like this feature except for that fact that they do not allow multiple pushes- for instance, pushing the Memo application button on the keyboard brings up the Memo app, but repeated pushes do not bring up the different categories. This is something that I would like to see changed in upcoming versions of the software driver.

There are some other advantages to having a keyboard. International characters are much easier to type. Onscreen buttons can be used from the keyboard by using special key combinations. Shortcuts can be accessed using the Shortcut key, and menu commands can be used with the Command key.

Where To Buy
I bought my GoType at CompUSA for $69.99. It has transformed my Visor into a laptop computer. It was probably a better investment than the Tiger Woods Golf module that I had to choose it over!

Conclusions
Pros: Sturdy construction, HotSync capability, programmable function buttons, included software.

Cons: Smaller size, function buttons are limited.
